Images In Search of a Narrative

These drawings are a re-investigation of a series of 800+ works I created on an iPad between 2012 and 2018. The images in the iPad series are drawn by finger in color; I draw them only through improvisation, resulting in “discovered“ imagery.

For this small sketchbook, I selected relevant drawings from the original series for sequential and emotive association. Rather than strictly copying the iPad works, I re-discovered each character as close as possible to its source. By converting my medium to the most basic ballpoint pen, this project became an exploration of translation into tone and line. I challenged myself to use tone as a substitute for color, and I used a ballpoint pen alone, limiting room for  major corrective adjustments. For each drawing, I worked from generalized markings to specific details in one sitting in order to achieve a fresh, newly expressive work.
